Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie has reacted after former presidential aide, Reno Omokri claimed that Nollywood is misrepresenting Nigeria with the messages portrayed in our movies.
Reno condemned Nollywood for always depicting Nigeria as a place where a lot of fetish (juju) things happen. He added that foreigners are wary of Nigerians because “Nollywood has conditioned them to see all Nigerians as fetish juju people.”
He concluded: “I sometimes wonder if Nollywood is an appropriate name for the Nigerian movie industry. Perhaps Jujuwood would be a more fitting name. No other institution has been as responsible for the stereotyping of Nigerians as diabolical people as Nollywood!”
Reacting to Reno’s claim, Yul Edochie wrote: “Past leaders failed to fix the country, you all turn around to blame Nollywood for it. All the gun violence movies you watch from America has it stopped you from applying for American visa, neither have the kung fu movies stopped you from going to China. It’s all entertainment.”
He added: “Speak with foreign investors. Their fear is the failing economy of Nigeria, the insecurity and the fact that Govt can wake up any day & make a law that can cripple all their investments without thinking twice. Their fear is not the stories from Nollywood films.”
