Valentine’s Day Reflections: The Imperative of Unity in Nigeria’s Opposition Politics as opined by the APGA National Chairman Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa – Written by NDUKA ANYANWU
As Nigerians celebrate Valentine’s Day, a day synonymous with love, affection, and unity, it is crucial that we reflect on the state of our nation’s politics. The opposition, in particular, must introspect and re-strategize to present a formidable front against the ruling party for a more coordinated and better ideas for progress.
In contemporary Nigeria, the opposition’s effectiveness is being tested like never before. The 2023 general elections exposed the fault lines within the opposition, and the consequences were dire. The lack of cohesion, discipline, and unity among opposition parties and leaders enabled the ruling party to capitalize on these divisions and maintain its grip on power.
As we approach the 2027 elections, it is imperative that the opposition learns from its past mistakes. The rules of opposition politics dictate that members and leaders must maintain a united front, avoiding public praise for the ruling party’s policies and actions. This is not a call for blind opposition, but rather a recognition that the opposition’s role is to provide a
viable alternative to the ruling party.
In Nigeria’s current political landscape, the opposition must prioritize unity and discipline. This requires a willingness to put aside personal interests and ambitions for the greater good. The opposition must also be strategic in its approach, leveraging its strengths and exploiting the ruling party’s weaknesses.
As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, let us remember that love and unity are essential for building a strong and effective opposition. The Nigerian people deserve a viable alternative to the ruling party, and it is the opposition’s responsibility to provide this.
In the words of Nelson Mandela, “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” The Nigerian opposition has fallen, but it can rise again. Let us use this Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to reflect, re-strategize, and re-commit to building a united and effective opposition that can provide a better future for all Nigerians.
The Time for Unity is Now
As we move forward, let us remember that unity is not a option, but a necessity. The opposition must work together to provide a viable alternative to the ruling party. The Nigerian people deserve nothing less.
Let us use this Valentine’s Day to rekindle the flame of unity and love for our great nation. Let us work together to build a better future for all Nigerians.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Nigeria!
