The First Lady of Imo state, Chioma Uzodinma has facilitated the transfer of newborn triplets of 20-year-old Ezenwa Nkechi who became pregnant after she was raped while hawking banana.
The babies who still needed to be incubated were moved to a more equipped Federal Medical Centre in Owerri yesterday, July 4th.
Sharing the news of the update, Chioma Uzodinma wrote:
“Yesterday, Saturday, 4th July, 2020, on my behalf, the Imo State commissioner for Gender and Vulnerable Groups, Hon. (Mrs) Nkechi Ugwu was at Prevailer Care Hospital in Owerri, the Imo State capital, where Miss. Nkechi completed the delivery of her babies by caesarian section.
“On arrival, we discovered that the facilities in the hospital may not handle the demands of the peculiar situations surrounding the aftermath of her delivery and optimum care for the babies.
“First of all, the babies needed to be incubated for some more days and weeks coupled with the huge demands on oxygen and other life-sustaining equipments.
“I will not fail to recognise and appreciate all the people who were generous to Ms. Nkechi’s plight by making kind donations into her bank account. We are happy that it came handy in assuaging some pressing moments.
“The management of the hospital was instructed to document the balance on the hospital bill and accumulated expenditures on sundry utilities and be subsequently passed on to the Imo State Ministry of Gender and Vulnerable Groups.
“Then came the need to have the babies and mother evacuated to a more sophisticated handling facility.
“On this note, we moved them to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) , Owerri where the babies were quickly placed in incubators with dedicated medical personnels assigned to take care of the situation.
“Going forward, we shall make arrangements for the rehabilitation of Miss. Nkechi after which we shall reintegrate her back to the society.
“We will continue to do the little we can to enrich humanity which is in line with the shared prosperity ideology of Governor Hope Uzodimma – led administration.“
However, my office will continue to work with relevant bodies and agencies to tighten the noose around rape in order to make the consequences of such evil act stricter and set sufficient deterrence for intending perpetrators.
