The SA, Media – Mr Nduka Anyanwu writes on behalf of the National Chairman as a devastating cult-related clash left at least 11 -15 people dead and many more injured in Nibo, Anambra State, on Sunday, October 20, 2024 during the celebration of the Onwa ASAA Festival, as well as in the Okpuno community, both in the Awka South Local Government Area of the state.

The attackers, arriving in a brown Lexus 300 SUV, stormed Oye Nwochichi market, near Nibo old maternity, and opened fire on unsuspecting victims before proceeding to Eke Nibo Market, causing additional casualties APGA National Chairman, Bar Sly Ezeokenwa, has condemned the violence, urging youths to eschew
violence and embrace peace. The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident, attributing the violence to a cult-related clash.

Response and Investigation:
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with festival-goers fleeing for safety amidst the gunfire.
“It felt like a war zone. The gunmen just stormed the place and started shooting everywhere. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying. It was absolute chaos,” one witness recounted.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but community members are calling for swift action from the authorities to restore peace and ensure security.
“We urge the government to take immediate action. We cannot continue to live in fear. We need peace and security in our community. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration has been marred by violence and bloodshed,” a local resident lamented.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident and attributed the violence to a cult-related clash. The State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the deployment of additional operatives to the area to restore order and ensure community safety. The police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information that could help apprehend the culprits, assuring the public that all reports will be handled confidentially.
