Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has unveiled the reasons behind democracy failure in Nigeria. He spoke openly about this during a keynote discourse at the “2023 Port Harcourt International Conference.” The conference was held at Dr. Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Chief Obasanjo orated an audience on Thursday, January 26th, on ‘Deepening democratic culture and institutions for sustainable development and security in Nigeria.’ On the topic, he spoke about the conduct of politicians during elections that results in administrative failure.
The elder statesman noted that Nigeria keeps failing as a country because everyone is impatient with democracy.
He said that despite having leaders from a variety of intellectual and professional fields, democracy still fails in the country.
According to Chief Obasanjo, contesting candidates focus on trying to buy the heart of the masses. Many make empty promises just to make the people vote them in for power.
Thus, he urged leaders need to start making efforts to correct past mistakes rather than trying to make Nigeria a new country.
Many were surprised, though, to see Obasanjo with ex-Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State while visiting Governor Nyesom Wike.
Photos of the three trended on Twitter. It was reported that Wike welcomed Obasanjo and Fayemi in his home in Rumuepirikom, Obio Akpor L.G.A., Rivers State.
