Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Recognizes Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa-Led APGA Leadership, Delists Njoku’s Faction from Portal – Written by Nduka Anyanwu, S.A. (Media) to The National Chairman of APGA, Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa
Recall that in November 20, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja declared Chief Edozie Njoku’s leadership of the All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) unlawful. And subsequently in an undisputed judgment last week, the highest court (SUPREME COURT) of the Land upheld and ended a long leadership turmoil that besieged APGA, which now declared Barrister Sly Ezeokenwa’s faction as the Authentic National Executive of APGA.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no option but to delete Njoku’s name and other purported national officers from its records and instead recognize Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa and the National Officers elected during APGA’s National Convention held in Awka, Anambra State, on May 31, 2023.
In the Commission’s press release, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun said the commission met on Tuesday, 17th December and deliberated on the issue.
In his words, “The Commission met today, Tuesday 17th December 2024. Among other issues, the meeting discussed the leadership issue in the All-Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA which has been the subject of litigation.
“The Commission has been served with the judgement of the Supreme Court with Appeal No. SC/CV/824/2024 APGA & ANOR vs OYE & ORS, DELIVERED ON 27TH NOVEMBER 2024 recognizing Barr. Sylvester (Sly) Ezeokenwa as the Chairman of the party.
“In compliance with the judgement of the apex court, the Commission has restored Barr. Ezeokenwa as the Chairman of APGA and restored his name on our website accordingly”.
This recognition by INEC is a significant victory for Ezeokenwa and his supporters, who have been locked in a bitter struggle for control of the party. The move is
expected to bring stability and cohesion to the party, allowing it to focus on its core mission of promoting the interests of its members and the Nigerian people.
In a statement, Ezeokenwa expressed his gratitude to INEC for recognizing his leadership and pledged to work tirelessly to promote the party’s ideals. He also
called on his supporters to remain calm and focused, urging them to avoid any actions that could be perceived as provocative or divisive.
The delisting of Njoku’s faction from INEC’s portal marks a significant turning point in the party’s history, and it remains to be seen how this development will impact the party’s future. One thing is certain, however: with INEC’s recognition, Ezeokenwa’s leadership has been vindicated, and the party can now move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and direction.
Impact on APGA’s Future
This judgment is crucial for APGA’s future, particularly in the upcoming 2025 governorship election in Anambra State. With the leadership tussle resolved, the party can focus on preparing for the election, united under Ezeokenwa’s leadership.
Overall, the yet again Supreme Court’s ruling marks a significant turning point for APGA, paving the way for a more stable and united party.
