When you think of the World’s most expensive city, you might be tempted to consider the high-rise metropolis of New York, or the celebrity-soaked Los Angeles or even the cultural crossroads of London.
You will be amazed to find out some of the cities on this list. According Forbes, Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey, released on Wednesday names the cities below as the world’s most expensive cities to live.
Hong Kong
The most expensive city in the world for expatriates to live in is Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s dominance of Mercer’s annual ranking for the second year running is all the more surprising given the protests that have rocked the special administrative region over the past few months.
The others include:
2, Tokyo
3. Singapore
4. Seoul
5. Zurich
6. Shanghai
7. Ashgabat in Turkmenistan
8. Beijing
9. New York
10. Shenzhen
Eight out of the top ten of the world’s most expensive cities for expatriates are in Asia. Non-Asian cities on the top 10 ranking include New York (9) and Zurich (5).
New York has become more expensive (it was 13th), while Zurich is just one of several Swiss cities leading the Europe camp. Others include Bern and Geneva.
