Corporal Punishment: Do you agree with Dan Nwafor or Sandra Odunze-Samuel?

This morning the chairman of Imo State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Daniel Nwafor took to his Facebook account to to defend corporal punishments in schools as a way of instilling discipline in kids.

He decried the situation where parents go to their children’s school to confront the teachers because their child was flogged.

Nwafor narrated how he, and many others like him who went to Marist Brothers Juniorate, Uturu, was straightened into the man he is today because of the discipline that was instilled in him via the use of corporal punishment.

However, his support for corporal punishment was almost completely watered down by Barr Sandra Odunze-Samuel who used the comment section to point out that teachers of those days and the ones in this era are not the same.

Read what Nwafor wrote and Sandra’s response below. Use the comment section to tell us what you think about corporal punishment in schools.

Nwafor wrote:

These days I have read several stories of parents who visit their children’s schools either to beat, warn or arrest the teachers for flogging their children and in the process inflicted cane marks on their bodies. Well, I attended Marist brothers Juniorate Uturu and those of us who encountered Bro Joachim Ezetulugo Okoye during his reign as Principal knew that you couldn’t have passed out from Marist as one of the best students in Nigeria(Yess !!!) Without having plenty plenty cane inflicted marks on your body either from the Prefects,Teachers or from the “Almighty” OKOYE. Even our Parents knew then that in Marist brothers Juniorate, you cannot just “Spare the rod” otherwise the ” Child will Spoil”. I am proud of the trainings I got from that school which helped greatly to form me into the Man I am today. ” Adjesum per Mariae”. I think I still support Coporal Punishments in Schools….Just thinking aloud.

Sandra’s comment:

We had patient and disciplined Teachers then, but what we have now are Angry teachers with Family problem everywhere who try to vent their anger on children.
Teachers who use both Iron,Rod,wood, cane, zinc, aluminum to hammer a child.
Am never against child discipline and Flogging, but I think they should caution with care, correct with love, chide with intention to correct not intention to punish to stupor.
And not all wrongs should even go with Flogging too. What if u accidentally hurt the child permanently or severe or maim the child 🧐🧐
I was flogged,my children should be flogged, but if anyone inflicts injury or pain on their body, forgerrit,I will deal with you mehn!!!

  1. I agree with Sandra. The issue is not with flogging but flogging out of frustration and cause harm. Flagging should be prohibited for this reason

  2. I understand the 2 of them. they have a point. But, it is still not ok to flog cause bodily injury on students in the name of punishment. I was flogged many times in school and had marks from the canes. we were disciplined with it. yes. but I can’t encourage it. We can look for other innovative ways of disciplining our students
