Members of a community in Malawi could not hold their excitement as they start using smart cards to purchase water from kiosks through a new pre-paid electronic payment system.
The water payment system called the e-Madzi project which was launched courtesy of a partnership between Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) and Telecoms Networks Malawi (TNM) allows consumers to buy water at anytime using smart cards.
To purchase water, LWB kiosks’ customers use their e-Madzi smart cards to swipe on the machine that is installed on each kiosk.
Speaking in an interview, LWB Acting Public Relations Officer (PRO), Trevor Phoya said:
“With e-Madzi we want people to have 24 hours access to clean and portable water. There will be no need for an attendant to serve them. The e-Madzi project is one of the initiatives that Lilongwe Water Board has come up with. It’s an innovative initiative; customers in low-income areas will have a card which they can use to access our water.”
