Catholic Priest suspended as school principal in Benue over alleged student brutality

Father John Asen, Principal of Mt St Gabriel’s Secondary School Makurdi, has been directed to proceed on administrative leave with immediate effect for alleged brutality of a student.

This directive was handed down by the Diocesan Bishop Wilfred Anagbe asking the principal to vacate his office following a preliminary investigation into a petition against him.

The Education Secretary, Father Terungwa Tor asked Father Asen to hand over to the vice Principal administration who is expected to run the affairs of the school.

The action was taken as a follow up of pictures of a student of the school that went viral following allege physical abuse and brutality by the principal.

Fr Asen assumed duty as principal of the school on September 12, 2014 after taking over from Fr Frasser. Before his appointment as principal, Fr Asen taught and gave chaplaincy services at Mount Saint Michael’s Secondary School, for nine years.
