Breaking: Obiano not released from detention, transferred to Abuja – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that the immediate-past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has not been released from detention.

According to The Punch, the EFCC Spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said that Obiano was transferred to Abuja on Friday morning. This was to counter news that he was released.

“He’s still with the commission. He was even transferred from Lagos to Abuja this morning,” Uwujaren said to Punch in a telephone call.

Uwujaren, however, did not state whether the ex-governor was arrested alongside his wife, Ebelechukwu, other the exact offense for which he was arrested for.

The former governor who had been on the Commission’s watchlist was arrested at the Murtala Mohammad International Airport Lagos at about 8.30pm as he prepared to board a flight to Houston, USA.

Earlier, the Public Relations Officer of EFCC, Wilson Uwajaren spoke with BBC Pidgin to explain why Obiano spent his first night as an ex-governor in detention.

Uwajuren said, “Obiano has been on our watchlist for sometime now. He had immunity as a governor and that is why we could not arrest him before now. Today he lost the immunity and was traveling out of the country before we finally arrested him.”
