Hauwa Indimi-Yar’adua, the daughter of a billionaire oil mogul Mohammed Indimi, has lamented over the rising cost of tomatoes in Nigeria.
She shared a photo of a small basket of tomatoes she bought for N8,000 in Abuja.
“I sent my people to the market and as of yesterday, this is N8k tomatoes. Still not over it,” she wrote on Monday, July 3.
Tomatoes are currently very expensive in Nigeria. A basket of tomatoes now goes for N45,000 – N50,000, depending on the market and state.
The high cost of tomatoes is due to a number of factors, including a pest infestation that has destroyed crops, a lack of storage facilities, and poor transportation infrastructure.
The high cost of tomatoes is a major concern for many Nigerians, as it is a staple ingredient in many dishes. It is also a major source of income for farmers.
It remains to be seen how the government will address the high cost of tomatoes and other staple ingredients in the long term. In the meantime, Nigerians are facing a difficult choice: either pay high prices for tomatoes or go without.
