Ezeokenwa re-echoes the need for Genuine Political Development and National Growth in Nigeria – by NDUKA ANYANWU
Political development in Nigeria is of significant importance and interest, considering the country’s vibrant political landscape and the challenges it faces. Nigeria has made progress in its democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999, but there are still
areas that require attention and improvement.
Some of the key issues in Nigeria’s political development as opined by The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) National Chairman Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa include:
1. Democratic Institutions: Strengthening democratic institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), judiciary, and legislature is crucial. These institutions must operate independently, transparently, and effectively to ensure free and fair elections, protect citizens’ rights, and uphold the rule of law. In the variance issues in retrospect of the last general elections, the litigation and other related non adherence to the rule of law in some cases cannot be over emphasized hence the need for the strengthening.
2. Electoral Reforms: Continuous efforts are needed to improve the electoral process, including voter education, voter registration, and the management of election logistics. Addressing electoral malpractices, violence, and ensuring the credibility and integrity of elections are essential for the consolidation of democracy for good governance.
3. Political Party Development: Enhancing the internal democracy of political parties and their adherence to democratic principles are vital for a robust political system. Promoting inclusivity, internal party democracy, and reducing the influence of money and godfatherism can help foster a level playing field for political aspirants.
4. Good Governance: Ensuring accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery by elected officials is critical for sustainable political development. This includes addressing corruption, improving public sector management, and implementing policies that promote socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, and social justice.
5. Youth and Women Inclusion: Encouraging the active participation of youth and women in politics is essential for the overall development of the country. Creating opportunities for youth leadership, addressing barriers to women’s political participation, and promoting their representation in decision-making processes are crucial steps towards inclusive governance.
It’s important to note that the perspectives on political development may vary among
different political parties and their leaders, however, these are some of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) National Chairman’s opinion on political development in Nigeria.
