The All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has consistently emphasized its dedication to promoting democratic principles in Nigeria hence its commitment to free and fair elections. Nigeria’s
electoral landscape has faced significant challenges in ensuring the integrity of its voting processes.

Historical Context
Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule in 1999 marked a significant shift from decades of military governance. However, the country’s electoral journey has been marred by violence, intimidation, bribery, and corruption The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was established in 1998 to oversee elections, but its effectiveness has been questioned.

INEC’s Role

INEC’s mission is to serve as an independent and effective Election Management Body (EMB),
committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections. Despite controversies surrounding electoral irregularities, INEC has introduced measures like smart card readers, etc to minimize fraud and rigging. But how far has these being implemented?

Challenges to Free and Fair Elections
Nigeria’s electoral landscape faces numerous challenges, including:

  • Violence and Intimidation: Widespread clashes between rival parties and factions have resulted in loss of life and property.
  • Electoral Irregularities: Disputes over voter registration, ballot box
manipulation, and corruption have undermined the legitimacy of elections
  • Lack of Transparency: INEC’s decision-making processes have been criticized for lacking transparency and accountability.

The Way Forward
To ensure free and fair elections in Nigeria, all stakeholders, including APGA, must prioritize:

  • Electoral Reforms: Strengthening INEC’s independence and capacity to conduct credible elections.
  • Voter Education: Enhancing civic awareness and participation.
  • Security Measures: Ensuring a secure environment for voters and electoral officials.

By addressing these challenges and commitments, Nigeria can move closer to achieving democratic elections that truly reflect the will of its people. APGA believes that peace can be restored in our political processes and it will put us
back on the path of progress and development.
