The Nigerian government is reviewing and expanding the National Social Register to include pensioners and veterans as recipients of the Conditional Cash Transfer program.
The review also removed from the register any individuals who are no longer impoverished, as well as those who have passed away.
However, the federal government clarified that only those without NINs and BVNs would be removed from the register.
The CBN will pay beneficiaries directly, rather than through third-party consultants.
The first round of payments will be made next week, with an initial five million households receiving N25,000 each.
The program is part of the Nigerian government’s National Social Investment Program, which aims to lift millions out of extreme poverty and improve the national economy.
On October 17, 2023, in commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, President Bola Tinubu launched the disbursement of N25,000 for three months to 15 million households.
According to a report by Punch, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Rasheed Olarenwaju, said that the federal government had reviewed and expanded the cash transfer program.
The objective is to minimize the impact of the recent subsidy removal and eradicate poverty across Nigeria. As part of the initiative, 15 million households will receive N25,000 each for three months.
The ministry uses a verified and expanded register of pensioners, veterans, and other vulnerable persons who were not previously included in the program.
