Arsenal emerged victorious against arch rivals Man City via penalties to lift the 2023 FA Community Shield.
It was a keenly contested game yesterday between Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and Pep Guardiola’s Man City in the FA Community Shield. This game is usually played between winners of the Premier League and the FA Cup, where the Premier League winner is same with the FA cup, the runner-up in the league becomes the opposition.
The first half ended in a goalless draw, however during the second half, the players seem to have found their scoring boot as Man City’s youngster, Cole Palmer, opened the scoring with a superb strike in the 77 minutes. The game seems over for Arsenal but a late deflected own goal from Arsenal Leandro Trossard’s strike at 90+11 minutes forced the game into a penalty shootout.
Kevin De Bruyne hit the bar with City’s first spot-kick and Rodri’s effort was saved by Aaron Ramsdale before Fabio Vieira converted the decisive kick in the annual curtain-raiser to the Premier League season. It ended 4-1 in favour of the Gunners.
Arsenal’s excitement and jubilation was out of the blue, it been a long time coming. Arteta summed it thus, “It feels great. It doesn’t get much better than winning a trophy at Wembley against the best team in the world, we are here to win trophies for this club. Seeing so many happy and proud people is great.”
Congratulation Gunners!
