A Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to charge suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele to court within one week or release him.
The order was made on July 13, 2023 during a hearing in a fundamental human rights suit filed by Emefiele to challenge his arrest and detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Emefiele was arrested on June 10, shortly after he was suspended by President Bola Tinubu. He has been in detention since then.
In his suit, filed through his lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), Emefiele is alleging a violation of his human rights.
Emefiele is alleging that his arrest and detention were unlawful. He is also alleging that he has been denied access to his lawyers and family members.
The court’s order is a significant development in the case, and it will be interesting to see how the DSS responds.
