The Police has arraigned a man who exposed an organ trafficking group in Anambra before the Awka Federal High Court.
The man, Nnamdi Emeh, was brought before the court on Thursday, 11th May.
He was accused of committing crimes that defied several laws in a 12-count charge by the Police.
Emeh, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His lawyer, Mr. Justus Ijeoma Esq., moved the bail application already filed for him. But the Police passed a counter-affidavit, claiming Nnamdi will jump bail and flee.
The document read in part: “If the Defendant/Applicant is granted bail, he will run out of Nigeria to a more difficult place to find him, as he is used to running out of the country as a result of crimes.”
The judge subsequently adjourned the ruling on the bail application to Tuesday, 16 May. In the meantime, the court directed that Nnamdi be remanded in the custody of the Federal Correction Centre, Awka.
Nnamdi, who has been in police custody for weeks, was on April 2, 2023, transferred from the Force HQ in Abuja to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Awka.
His transfer to the state came despite public outcry as to why he would be transferred from the Force Headquarters Abuja to the Anambra State Command. Most of the senior officers in the command were named in the brutalities happening at Awkuzu, SARS.
Nnamdi’s lawyer and family had made efforts to get the police to charge him in vain.
However, on Thursday, the Police finally sought proper prosecution in court. He was accused of malicious publications against the Police. He was also accused of hacking into the account of a suspect under investigation. According to the Force, Nnamdi had wired a large sum from the suspect’s account into his.
The police document filed before the court reads in part: “That if the Defendant/Applicant is granted bail, he will run out of Nigeria to a more difficult place to find him, as he is used to running out of the country as a result of crimes.”
