Governor Hope Uzodinma has ordered the activation of all health platforms to protect Imo state residents against the dreaded coronavirus disease.
The Governor gave this directive to ensure that the viral disease does not take the state unawares.
This comes after an Italian who arrived Lagos from Milan, Italy was confirmed infected with Coronavirus (Covid19) in Lagos by the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire.
In a press release signed by his Chief Press Secretary and made available to newsmen, Governor Uzodinma directed the state health sector through the public health department and primary healthcare should embark on an enlightenment campaign and institute robust emergency response measures.
In the same vein, he stressed the need to enhance border surveillance, community awareness and mobilization, and distribution of hand sanitizers across communities.
He also assured Imo people of adequate protection against the deadly virus.
However, Imolites have been advised to maintain a good hygiene practice by avoiding crowded locations, engaging in steady handwashing with sanitizer and report any suspected case to the nearest health facility.
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has deployed its Rapid Response Teams to support the Lagos State Government, in battling the index case.
NCDC Director-General, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, told Newsmen in Abuja on Friday.
According to Ihekweazu, the centre has also “escalated the multi-sectoral coronavirus preparedness group to an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at level II to lead response activities.”
Nigeria’s first case of coronavirus is the third confirmed case in Africa following two in Algeria, the first in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Ihekweazu said health facilities must remain on high alert.
“The NCDC will continue to keep Nigerians informed. It is important for them to be focused on facts and not fear,” he said.
“Nigerians should protect themselves by staying calm, drink lots of water.”
Ihekweazu advised that people should frequently wash their hands, avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth, practice respiratory hygiene and if anyone has a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, they should seek medical care early.
He assured that with the appropriate information, treatment and precautions, Nigeria will beat Covid-19 like Ebola.
