Tragedy strucks on Tuesday along Iwhrekpokpo road, Ughelli, Delta State following a gas explosion that burnt at least 6 persons and 10 shops in the area.
The explosion which occurred around 12pm and last for about 2hours engulfed shops in the area including a provision shop and a pharmacy, burning goods worth millions of Naira.
Eyewitness account disclosed that the incident occurred when a gas shop owner was refilling a cylinder close to a spot where a woman was frying baked beans popularly known as Akara.
It was thereafter that the cylinder which was apparently leaking, exploded as a result of the naked flame from the Akara seller.
Ten shops were reportedly destroyed while 6 persons including passersby got burnt as a result of the inferno.
The situation was however controlled with the timely intervention of operators of a fuel station who came with fire extinguishers to put out the fire.
