Balogun Fire: Buhari’s strong critic, Aisha Yesufu blasts British Katie Hopkins for slamming Nigeria’s fire service

The inability of the Lagos State Fire Service to put out the fire that broke out on Tuesday at popular Balogun Market in Lagos Island on Tuesday draw reactions from a lot of people, including British Katie Hopkins.

After seeing a video of a ‘firefighter’ trying to put out the raging fire with buckets of water, Hopkins reacted, telling Britons to be glad that they are not Nigerians the next time they consider criticizing their “fantastic British firefighters”.

Aisha Yesufu who is the co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement and a very vocal critic of the Buhari-led administration, called out Hopkins for being insensitive at the sight of such tragedy.

Aisha reminded her of the 14th of June 2017 fire incident that caught Greenfell Tower, a 24-storey block of flats in North Kensington, West London, and claimed 72 lives simply because the fire was not put out on time, thereby spreading to other parts of the building which could have been avoided if the London Fire Brigade had done a good job.

As the report of the fire at the Greenfell Tower shows, that the firefighters didn’t get sufficient training on how to respond to the fire. The first phase of the report also says that they didn’t have a contingency plan for the evacuation of the people from the burning tower, which would have saved more lives.

Watch the video of the report which Aisha shared to remind Hopkins that such failure from government response teams are not peculiar to Nigeria, as victims of the fire at Greenfell Tower in London had also suffered from similar deficiencies.
