The Bauchi state government has stated that preliminary findings from investigation carried out in the state, revealed that the over 200 mysterious deaths experienced in the state were caused by illegal abortions.
The Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Rilwanu Mohammad made the revelation while briefing members of Bauchi State Public Health Media Network yesterday.
He said the deaths were caused by unplanned and unwanted pregnancies among women who consult quack medical workers.
He also said the investigation has not been concluded on the development but preliminary findings have shown that the number of deaths could go up by the end of the investigation.
Mohammad added that situation was due to lack of understanding of the importance of Child Birth Spacing (CBS) by the victims as well as ignorance of what to do with such pregnancy, a development he said has become a major problem to family health matters in the state.
He stressed the need for adequate sex education for the girl-child by parents, opining that if such was done, unwanted pregnancies would be avoided thereby reducing death from complications of abortion, reports
